License & updates
A superadmin activates the license that keeps Makion running and, when the license includes updates, installs new versions of the desktop app and the on-prem server. Both live in Settings → License and Settings → Updates — see Settings. Licenses are managed through the customer portal at account.makion.dev.
License states#
Your license state shows both as a banner in the app and in Settings → License:
| State | What you see | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Trial | "Trial — {days} days left" with Get a license (in its last days) | You're on a trial that is running out. |
| Grace | "License expired — {days} days grace left" | The license expired but there is a short grace window before work stops. |
| Locked | "License required — activate to keep working" | No valid license — activate one to continue. |
The buttons on these banners open the customer portal at account.makion.dev.
Activating a license#
A superadmin activates the license in Settings → License:
- Paste the license key into the field and click Activate.
- Once active, use Replace key to swap in a new key, or Remove to clear it.
The summary line shows the key's details: customer / edition / kind / days-left-or-perpetual / updates on-off.
Only a superadmin can activate or change the license. Other users see guidance to ask their administrator. See Settings.
Updates#
Updates require a valid, update-entitled license. When you're licensed and entitled, an Update banner appears:

| App update available — v{version} | Update — downloads and installs the new desktop app version. |
| Server update available — v{version} | Update server — a self-update that runs with live progress; or Update server…, which opens a one-liner from the portal to run the update. |
You can also update on demand from Settings → Updates:
- Check for updates — asks the server whether a newer version exists.
- Download & install — installs the available update.
If your license is expired or not update-entitled, updates are unavailable — the app keeps its current version until the license is renewed. Renew from account.makion.dev.
